Committee: ECOSOC Topic A: The impact of globalization on employment worldwide
Director: Miguel Ángel Jiménez Siller Moderator: Ana Cecilia Flores Gómez
Globalization’s impact on economy has affected the labor market in ways like the level and structure of labor demand, in skill shortages, and unemployment elasticizes assign for example: 10 years ago a factory in China needed an estimation of 1500 workers now a days the number has decrease to its half, in other parts of the world like manufacturing leaders such as The Philippines, India or Mexico. All this changes have hard implications on workers among the world these for changing the way they adjust to globalization. For example years ago a shoe maker company had 500 to make the shoes, but years later they buy a machine capable to do the same amount of shoes in less time. These machine took away 500 job opportunities. The impact of globalization is affecting the least developing countries like India, Mexico or China because their economy is based on manufacturing. Globalization also affects in agriculture districts and enterprise zones for instance companies that used to invest their money on industrial zones now are investing just in tourism or other minor businesses because its interests are in money and not in humanitarian needs. However this policy cannot be changed since economy has no relation with human rights, what can be done is to give proper capacitating to workers in less developing countries. Globalization is described as “Two integration of international market” by O’Rourke and Williamson. Globalization has to major characteristics that have a deep impact on labor markets one is the increase of trade of final goods and services. The other is the increase in the trading flow of production inputs mainly labor, capital, and technology. Of course other aspects like the interaction of different society’s negations. Globalization means change, change means profit, profit means increased, the increased leads to progress and progress boosts the world’s economy. The problem is not globalization the real problem is the drastic way it’s changing the markets around the world, and the way people are taking it economically and personally.
The effect of globalization unemployment is measured through its impact on the overall sectional economy growth. Whit globalization the structure of economy would tend to correspond to the advantage of the country to increase its natural and human resources. In the decreased of the capital income since the industries concentrate in the exploit of manufactures instead of the use of machinery for massive production. Globalization would turn factories self-sufficient reducing their need to dependence on the worker class and in the way giving less opportunities, this gives less opportunities to the worker class but boosts the merchandising.
Globalization unemployment can be referred as the reduction of the governments intervention and privates the economic sector’s activities if economy was implicit this way with globalization it could mean the expansion of employment even in a short term. The problem is that globalization isn’t applied in that way to economy instead of pre wasting their goods they tend to making them even more government dependent by buying manufactures machinery, that makes them increased the amount of money they pay in taxes.
In other cases the liberalization process of companies to become 100% government to improve the internal and external balance of the economy in order to avoid the risk of an economic crisis and what it could bring with it.
Much recent studies using research from Latin America countries reveal modest impact of trade liberalization unemployment. This means that globalization attacks the workers class in a much larger scale that it seems since other consequence than just loosing their jobs, they could also lose their house and all their proprieties.
What generates the controversy in this cases is the question is globalization affecting the working class in a positive or a negative way? Is this improving the working class why or why not, if it is what we can make to fix it, and if it’s no why is considered such a big impact on economy. These leave us with 2 sides, the Pro globalization and the Negative globalization.
Pro Globalization: Globalization makes industries more successful since the advantages they make laud them to a higher profit. Even if some jobs are lost the damage made to the working class can be fixed by giving a proper capacitating to workers. The high class the one composed by big enterprise leaders is always be affected by the globalization because the fact that increasing machinery requires a smaller invest went for a bigger profit and also the service that produce is twice as good as the one produced before globalization. Even if the working class has a glass fragile economic balance globalization can benefit them, cause if well implied. As in China instead of firing 50% of the personal because of a new kind of manufacturing machinery they increased the personal by a 50% since every piece of machinery would need cleaning and maintenance.
Globalization is a way of improving economy that could lead to doubling an enterprise’s profit or even increasing it to a higher standards. Globalization and employment are seen as enemies since the industrial revolution, globalization lead to the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs opportunities. This is basically what’s happening now but in a much larger scale, times are different, people are smarter and capable at bending globalization for the good of all of humanity.
Negative Globalization: Globalization has changed the labor world in both positive and negative ways since the industrial revolution. Globalization was changed the way products are made, its quality, quantities and profit gotten from that investment. At the beginning globalization brought many advantages but even worse decade vantages maybe products were made bettered and faster but workers were replaced by machines, As the enterprise leaders became richer the working class and the mini-enterprises were closing businesses. Globalization revolution economy so fast that stocks and actions are sealed in a high price are buy cheaper than a cookie the next minute Globalization isn’t bad what is bad is the speed in which enterprises are changing their personal for machinery. Manufacturing leaders like China, India, and Mexico are facing the economic recession even harder, their enterprises become rich but their people die of hunger.
If globalization advances in a incorrect way it could lead to a bigger crisis than the one we are living in. Globalization cannot be stopped; it’s like dying to stop the river from flowing. But its growths and changes can be implied in a better way. Modern times required a modern economical system but what we are having known is fare away from modern.
